A feature of the SHOUTcast servers is the possibility of optional publication of information on server, including the number of current listeners to a station directory maintained by Nullsoft, in SHOUTcast website. Visitors to the website can choose a station to listen and download a playlist file to use in their own media player with possibility SHOUTcast. In September 2008, the Nullsoft redesigned the SHOUTcast website, which had remained about the same since 2000.

The SHOUTcast redesigned again in 2010 with more AOL appearance. Within the redesign, the directory and services renamed  «SHOUTcast Radio» instead of «SHOUTcast Streaming Technology». The redesign included a fully functional option to display the website and the list, with the old layout.

VideoLAN claims that "the AOL 's authorization for use of servers SHOUTcast Radio could force us to integrate the Toolbar Shoutcast Radio, which based on spyware and adware to our browser" and thus prevents the open source software using servers of SHOUTcast Radio. Therefore VideoLAN Remove support for SHOUTcast Radio from version 1.1 media player VLC and turned alternatively the users to Icecast list. Only the access to the list of stations SHOUTcast has removed, not the ability to play SHOUTcast streams.
